The curriculum vitae model: it is always right to use the European model?
For some time now, the European CV ( Euro Pass ) has become part of our life, but on this there are some myths to dispel.
– It is not mandatory. The company examining your profile will not discard the curricula not presented in European format unless it has been explicitly specified in some way in the announcement.
– Not all the sections need to be filled in . It is often believed that it is essential to complete each section and answer questions as in a test, sometimes reducing ourselves to copying and pasting the prepackaged sentences found on the internet or in books.
– It is not the ideal tool for everyone. The proposed model, if followed to the letter, is homologating. In order to propose oneself in creative areas, it is important that the curriculum reveals a certain aesthetic taste and for this reason also the shape is contained.
You must be able to make your resume attractive, if you propose yourself as a creative it is important that your creativity comes out at first glance. In addition, in the flood of CVs that an average company receives, it is important to stand out: seriousness, skills and aesthetic taste can coexist.
The following indications and recommendations are the result of many years of experience in close contact with the human resources managers of companies of various sizes, in particular operating in the Fashion and Communication sectors.
Here are the 10 rules to follow:
- Enter name, surname and contact details in a visible way, better if accompanied by all your contacts (e-mails, Social Network profiles, blogs…).
- Be inspired by the web but create a Curriculum tailored for you, it must reflect your way of being and working.
- It is not an identikit, inserting the photograph of your identity card is not always the best choice. A valid alternative is to graphically represent yourself or something that represents you.
- Brevity. If a resume is excessively long, it can discourage reading. Better try to summarize, it is recommended not to exceed one or two pages. Maybe together with the creative CV also prepare the traditional version.
- Maintain some traditional rules: such as, for example, ordering the academic qualifications obtained in order of importance rather than chronological, or immediately report the most relevant ones.
- Enter the marks obtained only if they are high. Otherwise better keep silent.
- Emphasize your skills, especially in relation to the job you are applying for.
- Use the dots listed rather than endless paragraphs and choose a sans serif font that is more readable.
- Try to be original, but don’t go overboard with the graphic effects. The winning weapon is clarity.
- Presenting your own portfolio of work done is an element that is always evaluated, sometimes even more important than the curriculum itself.
